Klagenfurt, 13 December 2023 – Klagenfurt aims to reduce parcel delivery traffic by 90% while improving services for residents and retailers. Together with project partners Tamburi, Jumug and Veloce, the emission-free “City Logistik Klagenfurt” delivery system is launching a pilot with 60 parcel stations available to all carriers. Environmentally friendly CargoScooters will handle deliveries. The city delivery service is free for residents and contributes to Klagenfurt’s goal of climate neutrality by 2030.

Klagenfurt’s residents receive around six million parcels a year. Delivering them requires carriers to travel about two million kilometres through the city each year, and parcel volumes continue to grow. The “City Logistik Klagenfurt” initiative aims to make deliveries more convenient for residents while reducing delivery traffic by 90%. The remaining deliveries will be emission-free, creating new opportunities for local retailers and businesses.

Pilot phase with 60 parcel stations

The project aims to demonstrate how parcels will be delivered in urban areas, for the first time across an entire large city. It brings together several logistics specialists. During the pilot phase, Tamburi will install 60 parcel stations over the coming weeks, available to all carriers. Machinery and manufacturing specialist Jumug will provide several emission-free CargoScooters. Transport company Veloce will operate the emission-free city delivery service, combining the CargoScooters with Tamburi parcel stations.

The emission-free city delivery system makes an important contribution to Klagenfurt’s goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2030. Following the pilot, it is intended to be rolled out across the city. The city and project partners have applied for EU funding for this expansion. The pilot is supported by the SCHIG competence centre through the logistics funding programme of the Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK).

About the project partners and delivery system

A dense network of parcel stations open to all carriers is being developed in Klagenfurt. Once fully rolled out, the aim is to have a Tamburi station within an average distance of less than 100 metres of every residential address. Tamburi’s slim, battery-powered stations fit into many locations even in an established city. They can also be used to send and return parcels. The stations are free for location partners and city residents.

Benefits for local retailers

The special service for Klagenfurt retailers offers collection from shops between 3 pm and 6 pm, with delivery to the recipient’s Tamburi station by 8 pm the same day, at standard parcel service rates. Recipients are notified by text message or email and can collect their items without contact whenever they choose. Local retailers can therefore deliver much faster than nationwide online shops at no extra cost.

Emission-free CargoScooters

Jumug offers Klagenfurt businesses a rental fleet of emission-free microvehicles for parcel and city deliveries. The CargoScooters are legally classified as bicycles and have a cargo capacity of two cubic metres. In use with leading parcel carriers, they have proved significantly more productive than conventional delivery vans: five CargoScooters can replace six standard parcel vans.

City delivery service

Veloce provides an emission-free city delivery service using CargoScooters. Services include collections from senders, sorting and handling, and deliveries to Tamburi parcel stations or business and residential addresses.

Companies with green logistics in their DNA

Founded in 1987 by owner Paul Brandstätter as Austria’s first bicycle courier service, veloce liefert gmbh has green logistics in its DNA. Veloce is a medium-sized logistics company with around 300 employees, including 15 in IT and software development. With several branches across Austria, it operates in B2C and B2B logistics. Veloce is the market leader in B2C delivery and installation services for electrical appliances. Together with group start-ups Tamburi and Jumug, it is creating the future system for urban B2C parcel delivery.

Tamburi develops, establishes and operates dense networks of smart, battery-powered parcel stations. These stations fit into a variety of settings without construction work, are located close to residential addresses and are available to every delivery company.

Jumug develops, manufactures and sells CargoScooters: emission-free specialist vehicles for urban parcel delivery. Classified as bicycles under Austria’s Motor Vehicles Act (KFG), CargoScooters are used by Austria’s largest mail and parcel carriers and are more efficient than conventional delivery vans.
